I laughed at this thinking it was a perfectly cromulent - but completely made up - way of saying “third last” — but I just looked it up and now I feel stupid since it’s actually in the dictionary. Today I learned!
Actually a really common word in Spanish. There are lots of words in english that sound made up that are just literal translations from other languages that non natives use more commonly. Really interesting!
It comes up when studying ancient greek, if I remember right it is used to describe which syllable gets the accent (ultimate, penultimate, or antepenultimate).
I also recall a shareware Ultima clone for the Amiga back in late 80's or early 90's called "penultima", but I think it's been lost to the sands of time.
