So can be said for a lot of people wanting to come to the U.S. to make a living.
Personally making immigration affordable and efficient to meet the demand is a possible direction we could go (I think it would reduce harm) but that isn't the one we've gone down so far.
What's all this we? How about Mr. Noah Smith since it's his idea. He could take one into his own home. Maybe a few of them. If he really wanted to help refugees though a better idea would be to go down to the local children state ward. Lots and lots of his own citizens who had to flee their homes. The state even pays you monthly for taking them off their hands! Won't get that for an adult Chinese person.

We are not taking them because America is (unfortunately) polarized into 2 camps.
The Liberal camp wants every black and brown immigrant they can get. The Liberal camp also does not also care about pro-America loyalty or the ability for immigrants to support themselves.
Edited to add: The Liberal camp wants people with darker skin because they see them as being oppressed. I have personally seen great discrimination by US ICE against immigrants with lighter skin colors.
The conservative camp wants no immigrants because immigrants vote for the Liberal camp.
(Almost) nobody was willing to take the farmers from South Africa.
We in Texas did take in the pretty girls with light hair from Ukraine, but that was totally unfair to only take pretty girls with light hair.
(Almost) nobody cares about the Chinese.
This is one problem with a 2 party system. Our founding fathers warned us, and we did not listen.

I salute your effort. On target valid points. What I am noticing however is both sides of the spectrum do agree on many things but the media buries this reality. The US must have immigrants. No way around that one.
One side however is saying yes, let them all in regardless. The other is saying concur but wait one. How about some fundamental rules of law like no hardcore criminals maybe? Can we at least have that checkpoint? And maybe honor during a major pandemic we have to shut it down for a few if we ourselves are locked down no? It's very disturbing without basic rules. End of the day this is a republic. A democracy is what happens when a republic breaks down according to Plato. After that...well I don't even want to think about it. It gets real bad.
