In sixth-sense terms, I once heard of experiments with a belt which would vibrate to indicate magnetic north. Apparently people really missed it when they had to give it up.

Where I’ve lived my entire life I have a long river immediately due south of me that runs east to west parallel, years ago I internalise north as away from the river.
It’s really discomfiting when I’m away and lose track of that completely.
