My rock bottom was becoming homeless in Toronto. I created a YouTube channel that I’m trying to build up to hopefully monetize and get me out of homelessness.

I’m working on growing my YouTube channel and learning more about how to become better at producing content.

The sandwiches may have been okay, as a onetime thing maybe, but eating these expired foods day in and day out for years, and some food they hand out has mould in it from being expired so long. They even gave me a cup of milk that was so spoilt that I threw it back up on the sidewalk in less than 5 mins after I drank it. We need to give homeless people healthy food, not expired.

Chocolate milk will generally remain drinkable for about one week after the "sell-by" date on the package. In this case, the sell-by date was 4 years ago! LOL that’s unfair and harmful to give to people, especially homeless people who may have poor health

This is what Toronto gave its vulnerable homeless people, as their Christmas meal.

Never ascribe to malice what can be explained by stupidity. Obviously they shouldn't give out expired food. But I'd guess it's incompetence that led to it, not some feeling that it's ok to give expired stuff to homeless people.

Could it also potentially be negligence? But wait a minute, constantly giving out this kind of expired food? Maybe one time, or two times, but almost on a daily basis? Lol something’s gotta be up! No?

What's the benefit in keeping three year old milk? There is no way a malicious government or supermarket can keep that up, at some point they are going to run out of storage.

The other reason is that expired food is often still edible but not legal to sell and these programs are about reducing waste, not about giving free food to the homeless. If you give fresh food away what are you going to do about the waste?

If you think this is some conspiracy against the homeless you should remember that many countries have unemployment or low income benefits that also apply to homeless people which give them the ability to buy food.

Some govs like here in Toronto do give welfare but due to inflation and no meaningful increase in welfare rates for many many years, most do not have enough money for food, let alone other basic needs, which is why more and more homeless people, are spending more time looking through the garbage for their next meal. Some have told me that this is intentional so the ruling class can oppress the lower classes and eliminate them faster.

Love this idea!

This is a very insightful point. That the receiver of a benefit might perceive the giver as benefitting from the situation in a way that the receiver may perceive as unfair…

Im over-dependent on the food places here for my daily food. Not enough money. Worried that welfare might be less in terms of money amount somewhere else. Never travelled far so it feels more unknown than my daily life. I prefer warm climates for sure!

Difficult to imagine that one would ‘like’ it but some people do choose to be homeless for all sorts of reasons so I wouldn’t be surprised. But I am sympathetic towards those people and believe they should be provided with help and support, while acknowledging their freedom to choose. There is a thing called resource resistance, which I’m wondering if it plays a role in her refusing help from you, but I would need more info about the context to better understand the situation…

There is a homelessness crisis here in Toronto, I am documenting it while simultaneously sharing my own life as someone struggling with homelessness and mental illness. I would appreciate any and all suggestions and/recommendations…
